The World We Hear, An Introduction
This chapter contains two sections:
Section one (Theories of Hearing) provides a brief
description of the two classical theories of hearing and brief biographies of the
proponents of the theories, Glen Wever and George von Bekesy. Theses two theories form an
important part of the history of hearing and an historical backdrop for the study of
hearing.
Section two (Experimental Method) contains a simple experiment
of a ball rolling down an incline. The slope of the incline is changed and the time it
takes the ball to roll down the incline is measured. The user is asked questions about the
experimental method and to provide a figure and table of the results. The rest of
this Hearing Tutorial contains demonstrations about the facts of hearing that were
obtained from experiments. In addition, tables and graphs will often be used in the
remaining chapters. Thus, this section is aimed at helping the user gain a basic
understanding of the experimental method, as well as tabling and graphing data.
